Customer often ask, "What are the differences between electrocompetent and chemically competent cells?" These cells differ in the way uptake of DNA is achieved. Chemically competent cells are treated with a salt solution to allow bound DNA to travel through the membrane. And heat shock is used to further enhance DNA passage. Electrocompetent cells do not require DNA binding. Instead, an electrical field is used to allow DNA to pass through the membrane.
