2026 Passion in Science Award winner in the category of Scientific Mentorship and Advocacy, Richard O'Rorke from the University of Auckland explores a unique approach to studying insect biodiversity using cars as bio-samplers. With the help of collaborators, O'Rorke leverages the use of car number plates to standardize data collection across various vehicle types and speeds. This project addresses the alarming decline of insect populations and the shifting baselines in biodiversity, while also considering the impacts of climate change, land use, and invasive species on local ecosystems. The aim is to illuminate the often-overlooked changes in insect life by examining samples collected from vehicles on New Zealand roads.
